Bob Knight, the legendary college basketball coach, has died.
Knight, also known as “The General,” is one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA history as he had 902 Division 1 wins. He coached for the Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech.
While coaching the Hoosiers, Knight won Championships in 1976, 1981, and 1987. During his time in Bloomington, he went to the Final Four on five occasions.
Prior to coaching, Knight played at Ohio State where the team won a championship in 1961.
Besides coaching college teams, he also coached Team USA where they earned a gold medal in 1984.
Knight was well-known for his hot temper. He was no longer in Bloomington after he was seen on a recording choking ex-player Neil Reed in 1997. A student, Kent Harvey, had also accused him of pulling him by the arm and referring to him as a “knight.”
In 2001, Knight became the head coach of Texas Tech. There, he led the Red Raiders to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2005.
In 2008, he retired, and his son, Pat, took over.
After his retirement, Knight was employed by ESPN as an analyst.
He had been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Back in April, Knight was placed in the hospital with a serious illness.
He was 83 years old.
