47-year-old Charlotte Simpson, from Alabama, is facing new charges in the death of her 6-month-old grandchild.
Simpson was originally apprehended and charged with manslaughter in October 2021. She posted a $30,000 bond and was released.
Now, Simpson is in custody again. Last week, a grand jury upgraded the offense to a capital murder charge. This time, there is no bond.
On October 15, Simpson was caring for baby Xander Myers. The grandmother told authorities that she discovered that he wasn’t breathing as he slept in his bed. She then contacted 911. The baby was taken to a medical facility where he was pronounced dead.
A medical examiner found that the child showed signs of “abuse and would be deemed a homicide.” Reports indicate that the autopsy revealed that the child died from a bilateral subdural hematoma, “bleeding and swelling around the brain.” This is also known as “shaken baby syndrome.”
Simpson told police that she was “dancing around’ with the child in various positions when he was injured. However, police believe that is not the whole truth.
