3.4kviews

On Tuesday, the Grambling State University Tigers baseball team honored several Negro League teams. These include the Memphis Red Sox, St. Louis Stars, Detroit Stars, Atlanta Black Crackers, and the New York Black Yankees.

The Negro Leagues have a rich history that goes back prior to and subsequent to Jackie Robinson’s 1947 integration of Major League Baseball. However, many people who played in those leagues have never been recognized.

As GSU played LSU on Tuesday, the Tigers baseball team honored the leagues by sporting interesting uniforms. They players’ tribute included wearing various uniforms that featured Negro League teams’ names on the front.

By displaying these uniforms, Grambling praised a part of history that may have been forgotten.

Although they lost to LSU, the university has started new discussions about the Negro Leagues and their history.
