‘God Must Have Put You In My Car,’ Uber Driver Says Prior To Donating Kidney To Passenger

71-year-old Bill Sumiel was picked up by Uber driver Tim Letts, 33, from a dialysis center, in Delaware, in October 2021.

During the ride, Letts found out that Sumiel had been in need of a kidney transplant for over three years.

“I think God must have put you in my car,” Letts told his passenger. “If you’ll take my name and number, I’ll give a kidney to you,” he then offered.

Sumiel was shocked and grateful.

The Uber driver, who is also an Army veteran, then did as he said and went for testing to see if he had compatible blood and tissue typing. He was then found to be a match.

Fortunately, the surgery went well, and Sumiel’s body accepted the kidney.

“Giving a kidney is the gift of life, and I feel so fortunate to have that gift. I can almost live my life back to normal,” Sumiel expressed, almost two years later.

Although Letts has now moved out of the country, the two have vowed to always remain friends.

“I don’t think that politics or background really define whether two souls can be friends or not. I saw somebody that I felt a connection to, somebody that I felt I could make a difference for,” Letts said.
