Founder Of A Small Private School In Charlotte Sentenced To 18 Months For Her Role In Obtaining False Visas For Foreign Students

The founder of a now inactive private school in Charlotte, NC was recently sentenced Tuesday morning to 18 months in a federal prison. Evelyn Mack has been investigated for human trafficking. The government said Mack created a private school in Charlotte–The Evelyn Mack Academy– and used it to promise foreign student athletes playtime at a prominent school along with scholarship offers. Instead, prosecutors stated these athletes disappeared in the hands of the recruiters and basketball coaches. Some athletes appeared in towns more than 100 miles away and others were missing for months. The assistant US Attorney on the case noted one former student-athlete is now homeless. Mack was facing up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of concealing, harboring, or shielding unlawful aliens. She admitted to playing a role in the human trafficking ring. Mack departed the courtroom in a wheelchair due to her Parkinson’s disease, which the judge considered when giving her leniency. Mack’s attorney, James Exum, said Mack hoped for a better deal when she pleaded guilty. Exum also stated “Certainly it starts in a certain sense with Miss Mack, but the real culprits are the coaches. And they are still out there. They are free, and they’re still doing the same thing all over the country”. The government stated Mack grossed around $75,000 by hiding 75 foreign student athletes who came to this country illegally. A federal complaint against Mack alleges she “knowingly and intentionally entered false information regarding whether these foreign nationals were in compliance with their F-1 student visas”. Mack was confronted in 2016 by a local news crew and she claimed “I would never participate in human trafficking. All of my students are here legally”. The academy operations came to a screeching halt in 2017. Because of Mack’s health, she will be kept in a low security facility and she will serve a year of supervised release when she gets out. There has been mention of investigation with coaches whose name arose in this case but it is not certain they will be prosecuted.
