A former Wolfe City police officer was found not guilty of murdering Jonathan Price two years ago by a Hunt County jury Thursday.
On October 5, 2020, former Officer Shaun David Lucas was arrested for the murder of Jonathan Price.
On October 3, Officer Lucas responded to a disturbance call around 8:30 p.m. at a gas station on the 100 block of Santa Fe Street.
According to reports, when Lucas arrived he was greeted by Price regarding a possible fight. When Price tried to greet the officer he believed Price was drunk and tried to detain him.
When Price resisted Lucas pulled out a stun gun and deployed it. They then say Price started walking towards Lucas and reached for his stun gun. That’s when Lucas pulled out his weapon and shot four times.
He struck Price in the upper torso. Price was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Texas Rangers began investigating the case and said Lucas’ actions “were not objectionably reasonable.”
Lucas attorney claimed that his actions were completely justifiable and he was only doing what any officer would do when someone was attempting to take their weapon.
Body cam footage was also revealed during the case that was not released to the public.
It took jurors only 6 hours to reach a non guilty verdict.
After the verdict was announced Thursday Lucas attorney, Robert Rogers said, “My client’s been in jail for two years over a split-second decision that he made in the line of duty.”
Price’s family was also in the courtroom during the ruling and said they plan to pursue criminal charges against Lucas.
Price’s attorney Lee Merritt said the evidence was “overwhelming in favor of guilty” and plans to move forward with a federal civil rights case filed against Wolfe City.
