Michael Newman, an ex-student of Howard University School of Law, has filed a $2 million lawsuit against the institution, citing racial discrimination.
Newman, a white man, has called the educational environment at the university hostile.
He began going to the law school in the fall of 2020. In September 2022, he was expelled. Newman is now looking for $2 million in monetary damages for “pain, suffering, emotional anguish, and damage to his reputation.”
He also alleges that he raised concerns about his supposed mistreatment to school administrators. However, the law school’s dean supposedly didn’t agree that Caucasian students at Howard Law, and even Newman, had dealt with racial discrimination in any form at the school.
After talks of Newman’s complaints, Howard students are said to have found a tweet from his private Twitter account. It depicted a slave with a whipped back. The caption with it read, “But we don’t know what he did before the picture was taken,” the lawsuit states.
Newman had said that the tweet was aimed at people who “attempt to explain away videos of police brutality by claiming the victim must have committed wrongdoing before the video started.”
He added that more problems came when the school went to online learning due to the pandemic. This is when many students started communicating on online platforms and GroupMe chats. Newman claims that he felt disconnected at the school, likening himself to a Black student at a primarily White institution. These issues led to a digital town hall meeting with 300 students to talk about Newman’s racial harrassment of classmates.
In a statement, Howard said that it is “prepared to vigorously defend itself in this lawsuit as the claims provide a one-sided and self-serving narrative of the events leading to the end of the student’s enrollment at the university.”
