1.2kviews

On Friday morning, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was fatally shot as he gave a campaign speech in Nara, Japan.

Abe was Japan’s longest-serving prime minister and was declared deceased at 5:03 p.m. He was 67.

Officials in Tokyo note that Abe was struck with a bullet on the right side of his neck. He had been talking at a rally as Japan’s Upper House elections are set to take place on Sunday.

Abe fell to the ground, instantly, when he was shot and was transported to a medical facility. Reports indicate that about 20 doctors worked on Abe as a bullet “deep enough to reach his heart” was lodged inside of him. Physicians were unable to stop his bleeding.

Yamagami Tetsuya has been arrested in relation to the killing, and a handmade gun was located at the scene.

The 41-year-old suspect was formerly employed with Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force. He is said to have told officials that he was mad at the prime minister and had planned to kill him.

According to reports, Japan has one of lowest rates for gun deaths, internationally.

Abe had served as the prime minister in Japan from 2006 to 2007, and from 2012 to 2020.
