Florida Man Rejects Offers to Sell His Home for $900,000

A Florida man is unwilling to sell his family home although a huge $600 million commercial development is taking over. Orlando Capote’s father purchased the single-family home in 1989. He had fled Cuba and worked two jobs to reach his American dream.

The Plaza Coral Gables development will include shops, restaurants, residences, office space, and a 242-room luxury hotel.

Capote has declined offers of up to $900,000 for the 1,300 sq. ft. residence. Capote’s father died in 2005. His mother died last year. Prior to her death, she requested that her son not sell the “family treasure.”

He states the city has broken codes and trashed his property. Capote has recorded himself wearing a heavy-duty contractor’s mask to protect his lungs from dusty debris. There are also cranes and trucks that are extremely noisy on the other side of a construction fence.

Coral Gables representatives say the development has broken no laws or fire codes.
