The bodies of five university students were discovered stuffed in a car on a dirt road in north-central Mexico, police say.
The vehicle and the bodies of the victims, all young males, were discovered Sunday in a rural location outside of the city of Celaya. This area has seen an increase in drug cartel violence within the last few years. The area is also close to Latina University of Mexico, and school officials have noted that all five victims were enrolled at the institution.
Sources have reported that the men had been fatally shot.
In June, a drug cartel set off a car bomb in Celaya, targeting police. This resulted in a National Guard officer being killed. In that instance, National Guard officers had been responding to details about a parked vehicle that seemed to have bodies inside. However, when they walked up to the car, it exploded, sending officers into the air.
Authorities had stated that the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel was responsible for that occurrence. They had been fighting with the Jalisco cartel for control over Guanajuato.
