The firing of a talented Black basketball coach in Opelousas has gone viral.
27-year-old Breonna O’Conner is said to be an outstanding coach, instilling discipline when needed, with a 18-4 record.
The choice to fire O’Conner was said to be related to a remark that coaching wasn’t a “fashion show.” This received much backlash considering her professional appearance and accomplishments. Many have stated that they would want their children to be taught by someone who demands self-respect and isn’t afraid to display their capabilities.
Luckily, after all the controversy, O’Conner has a new job at Scotlandville, an institution that is already well-known to her.
O’Conner attended a clinic at the school where she met Hornets’ athletic director Sample. She was also a part of Ville Platte team that had gotten a Class 3A runner-up position to University High nine years ago.
She then went on to play collegeiate basketball at Northwestern State and Augusta University in Georgia.
