On Thursday, police in Pakistan apprehended Shahzaib Khan after he was accused of fatally shooting his newborn baby because of the gender.
The incident occurred on March 7. An uncle of the seven days old child reported that, “A baby girl was born…He was infuriated.”
It was later revealed that the little baby, Janna, which means ‘heaven,’ suffered five gunshot wounds.
It is noted that female infanticide happens a lot in Pakistan, including 500 bodies of babies that were discovered trashed in the last two years. The majority were girls.
Because families usually have to pay a dowry when a female gets married, most families in Pakistan don’t want a daughter.
The country also wants to protect its image. Thus, they believe that a female can easily mess up her family’s reputation with certain activities, normally connected to sex.
Many Pakistanis have shared their disapproval of the incident on social media.
One person wrote, “I’m disgusted to the core. I feel terribly for the mother. Look at that beautiful daughter she had. Women lead the world. It’s 2022.”
