The principal that was shown in a viral video paddling a child will keep her title. However, there was found to be probable cause to administer sanctions against her Florida educator certificate. Other penalties could come in the future.
The family is happy that the principal will be given consequences but hopes this doesn’t happen to other students.
Melissa Carter paddled a 6-year-old child while the child’s mother recorded the situation. It happened on April 13 after the child vandalized a computer, noted the police report. Paddling children in Florida is not a crime. Nevertheless, it is against the Hendry County District Schools’ own guidelines.
Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said he found probable cause for sanctions against Carter. Penalties could entail reprimand, fine, probation, restriction of the scope of practice, suspension not to exceed five years. Revocation not to exceed 10 years or permanent revocation of her educator certificate are options, too.
