On Tuesday, three members of the same family were charged with hate crimes after brutally beating a man due to his sexual orientation.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office, in Florida, apprehended Inna Makarenko, 44; Yevhen Makarenko, 43; and Oleh Makarenko, 21. They have been charged with attempted first-degree murder, battery during the burglary of a dwelling, and kidnapping. All three could receive life sentences.
Last August, the three relatives broke into a 31-year-old man’s residence in Pompano Beach. They brutalized the man so badly that he became irreversibly blind and suffered more extensive wounds, officials say.
“They secretly, forcibly or by threat abducted or imprisoned the victim against his will…to terrorize him,” arrest documents stated. It added that the three “struck the victim numerous times…causing serious bodily injury and disfigurement, almost resulting in his death.”
In order to keep the victim’s identity hidden, authorities haven’t provided much information about the attack. However, they did say that the Makarenkos knew the man prior to the attack and beat him because he was gay.
The three are being held in custody without bond.
A fourth person related to the incident, Vladyslav Makarenko, 25, was taken into custody on Monday.
The family is said to be Ukrainian refugees. An online petition in their favor states that they are being wrongly accused.
