24-year-old Patrick Crusius, the white Texas gunman who killed 23 people in a racist rage at a Walmart in El Paso, has received his punishment. The incident was one of the deadliest mass shootings ever in the U.S.

On Friday, Crusius was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences. This was for the shooting that aimed to kill Hispanic shoppers on the U.S.-Mexico border.

In February, Crusius pleaded guilty to almost 50 federal hate crime charges after the death penalty wasn’t an option. However, he could still be sentenced to death in a separate matter in a Texas state court. That case hasn’t gone to trial as of yet.

Crusius didn’t talk during the hearing and showed no reaction as he received his punishment. The judge recommended that Crusius serve his prison terms at a maximum security prison in Colorado.

The sentencing hearing occurred close to the El Paso Walmart where Crusius used an AK-style semiautomatic rifle to carry out the killings. The attacks happened after he had posted a rant online, hinting at a “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

Some of those who were killed were Mexican citizens. Not only did many people lose their lives, but over 24 people were hurt and multiple others were severely traumatized as they hid or left the scene frantically.
