On Friday, around 1 a.m., a 9-1-1 operator accidentally shot and killed a colleague inside of a dispatch center in Kentucky, officials say.
The Bell County Kentucky Sheriff’s Department stated that two dispatchers were exchanging guns when one of the weapons discharged unexpectedly.
23 year-old Kyle Garrett was taken to a hospital were he succumbed to his injuries.
The other dispatcher, Colton, was said to have been Garrett’s “cousin and best friend.”
“They grew up together and shared the hobby of casual gun trading. This is a tragedy that you could never prepare for. We are asking for prayers for the family of Kyle and Colton. We also ask that you pray for the dispatchers, deputies, and first responders that work alongside them everyday,” stated Sheriff Mitch Williams.
He also added that policies were broken as non-sworn employees aren’t permitted to have weapons in 9-1-1 centers.
An autopsy will be performed on Garrett as an investigation continues.
