Derek Chauvin Pleads Guilty To Violating George Floyd’s Civil Rights

3.1kviews

Derek Chauvin is the ex-Minneapolis police officer serving a 20-year-prison sentence for murdering George Floyd. On Wednesday, he plead guilty to violating Floyd’s civil rights. This could add more jail time to his sentence.

The action, taken in federal court, will prevent a trial on the separate charges.

Federal prosecutors had charged Chauvin with several civil rights violations regarding Floyd and a 14-year-old in a 2017 matter.

In both instances, he placed his knee on the victims’ necks while they were being detained. The charges allege that he used unreasonable force.

Because he plead guilty, other charges were removed. Prosecutors are planning to seek a 25-year sentence to be served while he is already serving his punishment for killing Floyd. They hope to add an additional 30 months.

Chauvin chose to plead quilty to the federal civil rights violation charges. This came after the judge informed him that without a plea, it was possible he could receive a sentence of life in prison.
