On Thursday, authorities in Florida announced that a deceased ex-sheriff’s deputy is the only probable person that is suspected of committing a murder.
In November 1983, 11-year-old Lora Ann Huizar went missing while walking home from a gas station. Her body was found after three days.
The gas station and the location where the girl’s body was found were in an area patrolled by deputy James Howard Harrison.
Witnesses had stated that they had observed a uniformed officer in the vicinity when Huizar went missing. That officer was later identified as Harrison.
Authorities had “established probable cause” to name Harrison in the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of the girl. Detectives say that he changed the crime scene. He put the girl in a drainage ditch as he tried to get rid of evidence.
In 2008, Harrison died from cancer at 73.
Initially, authorities weren’t able to connect or identify Harrison or anyone else to the crime. Sources say that Harrison had told two witnesses to go away from the location before officers arrived.
Detectives working the cold-case later found out that the place and position of Huizar’s body didn’t match what the first detectives say that they observed.
Harrison was said to have been inappropriate with many young girls in his 10 years in law enforcement. He may also have been involved in other sexual assault cases in Florida.
