Self-driving robots are set to launch in certain areas of Dallas.
These autonomous machines will be used for delivering food and small grocery orders.
Customers can access these robots through Uber Eats to receive their food and grocery orders.
Currently, the robots will operate within a two-mile radius.
When a customer places an order using the Uber Eats app, they will have the choice of selecting either a human carrier or an autonomous vehicle.
Yulia Shveyko, Avride’s head of communications, stated, “Once the robot picks up the order from the restaurant, customers can track its location on the map in the Uber Eats app. The hatch will remain locked during delivery, so only the customer who placed the order will be able to open the robot.”
According to the automotive company, there is a button in the app that will unlock the door for access to the order.
Avride mentioned that if the robot encounters a complicated situation, it will automatically stop, and a remote team can connect with the robot to assess the situation and provide guidance on how to proceed.
The robots are roughly the size of a large suitcase and are equipped with several cameras, a red light, and an animated screen for visibility. They can travel at a maximum speed of five miles per hour.
The delivery robots are expected to be operational in Dallas within the coming days, and unlike human delivery drivers, tipping is not required.
The delivery service will begin in the Downtown Historic District of Dallas.
In 2025, Shveyko noted that their partnership with Uber will expand to include robotaxi services.
