Last week, a North Texas postal worker pleaded guilty to stealing stimulus checks.
Darius Williams, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service, began taking the mail in March 2021. This included stimulus checks from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He continued the scheme for two months.
Court records show that Willams was employed at the Oak Lawn Post Office in Dallas. He is accused of committing the thefts from his routes and others.
Authorities say that Williams would open the mail with stimulus checks inside of them. He would them make a profit buy selling them. He did so knowing that the checks would be fraudently put into bank accounts.
Police add that Williams took pictures and recordings of himself as he was surrounded by several unsealed envelopes.
Records show that Williams was employed at the U.S. Postal Service from July 2019 to June 2021.
On March 22, he pleaded guilty.
Williams must now serve up to five years in prison. He also has to pay a fine of up to $250,000 and a $100 fee to the U.S. District Clerk and restitution to the victims and community.
