Dallas Firefighter-Paramedic Won’t Face Charges For Kicking Mentally Ill Man In The Head Repeatedly
A mentally ill man was kicked in the head. Now, an ex-Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedic has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the incident.
The relatives of Kyle Vess wanted charges to be filed as the outcome of the public integrity investigation. It involved Brad Cox, a trained mixed-martial artist.
In August 2019, crews were responding to a call, regarding a grass fire. The incident was recorded on camera, and a man was seen lying by a section of grass that had burned.
As Cox was coming up on the location, he began to stomp the grass with his feet.
Vess eventually stood up, swung at Cox, and chunked a part of a PVC pipe at him. Vess then went down to the ground while Cox kicked him over and over.
The family of Vess had filed a lawsuit against the city, but a judge dismissed the civil suit last week. The family had argued that the city was partially responsible for Vess’ wounds. This was because they said the city didn’t give their workers the proper de-escalation and use-of-force training.
The family’s lawyer added that Cox should have been terminated long before this occurrence because of previous actions of misconduct.
Initially, Cox’s license was suspended, but later it was given back to him.
