CPS Reviewing Rockwall Heath Workout That Led To Student Hospitalizations

A state agency is reviewing an incident that occurred during a workout that caused multiple high school players in North Texas to be sent to the hospital.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is now looking into the occurrence that happened at Rockwall Heath High School on Jan. 6.

The parents of two of the football players reported that the workout was extreme and excessive. They added that their sons were unable to lift their arms, their urine was dark, and they were hospitalized for multiple days. They now want someone to be held accountable.

One of the parents is a medical doctor and saw that her son was having symptoms of a dangerous medical condition where muscle tissue breaks down extremely fast.

Those signs were showing three days subsequent to the workout where players had to perform 400 pushups.

“When my son said his wrist was hurting, one of the coaches said to him, ‘Your wrist should be healed by now, keep going.’ He didn’t tell me this until recently because he didn’t want me to be upset,” stated the mother, Dr. Osehotue Okojie.

When Rockwall Heath sent a letter to parents, it informed them that Coach John Harrell was placed on leave, and an independent investigation had started.

Harrell has been with the team since 2019 and was named head football coach last year.
