A Fort Worth Federal Prison Hospital, which is known as the greatest concentration of people testing positive for COVID-19 in Texas, is trying to grant some inmates a “Compassionate release.”
Over six hundred of the fifteen hundred inmates located at the Federal Medical Center Fort Worth have been tested positive for COVID-19 in the past few weeks, and eight inmates have died from being infected.
Thursday Morning, an inmate who had recovered alongside other inmates was released into home confinement after his family member and activists pleaded for weeks to officials.
From Fort Worth Adan Borrego had served half of his ten-year sentence for conspiracy to possess a controlled substance at FMC Fort Worth.
Adan Borrego has a heart condition and diabetes.
When he was released Thursday, he stated that he was concerned about how close inmates were to one another inside the FMC Fort Worth, he estimated around three hundred inmates inside.
Adan Borrego stated that “It’s just real crowded, real crowded,” he says with even the medical masks on it was a difficult task to keep away from one another, especially those who were showing signs of the Coronavirus.
Cynthia Solis, Adan Borrego’s nieces had protested for days with a criminal justice activist, Shenita Cleveland. She had spoken with a representative of the Warden at FMC Fort Worth to try and secure her uncle’s compassionate release.
Her main fear was that her uncle would contract more severe symptoms than he was already displaying, despite his preexisting conditions.
Cynthia stated that “They should have been prepared for this. Everybody warned the [Bureau of prisons] that this would happen, that it would spiral out of control. And that is exactly what happened here,”
It was stated by the NBC five investigates reports that the prison has set up a series of medical tents on prison grounds to treat the sickest patients and to help triage, earlier this month.
