Former NFL running back Clinton Portis has been given six months in prison and six more months of home confinement. This is for his part in an operation to defraud the NFL health care program.

Portis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud in September. He agreed to repay $100,000 to the health care plan he defrauded.

The case came about when several former NFL players turned in false claims to the NFL Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account. This fund was put into place to pay back up to $350,000 in medical fees for ex-players and their families.

Portis, along with 15 others, were said to have asked for money for medical equipment that they never bought. These items included things such as hyperbaric oxygen chambers, ultrasound machines, and electromagnetic therapy devices used on horses.

The head leaders of the scheme would find former players and offer to turn in claims, for kickbacks in return. The fraud totaled $2.9 million.

Robert MCune, a former teammate of Portis’s, faces a life sentence for health care fraud, 11 counts of wire fraud, and three counts of identity theft.

Others who plead guilty are Joe Horn, Carlos Rogers, Correll Buckhalter, James Butler, Ceandris Brown, John Eubanks, Antwan Odom, Etric Pruitt, Darrell Reid, Anthony Montgomery, and Frederick Bennett.
