Carlee Russell Won’t Face Jail Time After Saying Kidnapping Hoax Was Due To ‘Emotional Issues And Stress’

1.3kviews

On Thursday, Carlee Russell disclosed why she faked her abduction last summer. This was a matter that sparked nationwide panic as she pleaded guilty to two counts and avoided jail time.

“I made a great mistake while trying to fight through various emotional issues and stress,” 26-year-old Russell stated to the court as she was crying.

The nursing student expressed her remorse. This was for falsely reporting that she had observed a baby crawling alongside an Alabama highway. Just minutes later, it appeared that she had vanished. Two days later, she showed back up without an explanation.

“I’m extremely remorseful for the panic, fear, and various range of emotions that were experienced across the nation. I want to specifically acknowledge and take accountability for the pain and embarrassment that I afflicted upon my family, my church family, friends, neighbors, community, and all of those who were directly involved in the search efforts for me,” she added.

Russell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of false reporting to law enforcement authorities and false reporting an incident. The judge noted that she will not face jail time due to the fact that she does not pose a threat to the community.

However, she will be sentenced to one- year probation, community service, and mental health counseling. Russell also must pay $17,974.88 in restitution to the city of Hoover.

On July 13, Russell contacted 911 to say that she had seen a baby crawling along Interstate 459 in Hoover. When officers got to the location, they discovered Russell’s car running, her cell phone, wig, and purse. But, they never saw a child.

Two days following that, she showed up to her parents’ residence. There, law enforcement discovered her conscious and speaking. It had previously been reported that she had been “unresponsive but breathing.”

At first, Russell told police that she had been kidnapped by a white man with orange hair. However, that story fell apart when cops found out that she Googled the abduction-theme action film “Taken” and the Amber Alert system just days before.

It still isn’t known exactly where Carlee was for 49 hours nor the exact details that led up to the made up story.
