Simiso Buthelezi, a South African boxer, has died after a fight with Siphesihle Mntungwa on Sunday. Buthelezi’s fight circulated social media when he was observed punching wildly and away from his competition after knocking Mntungwa against the ropes.
The referee quickly intervened as Buthelezi showed signs of distress. Mntungwa won the match through a TKO as Buthelezi was transported to a medical facility. There, doctors found that he had a brain bleed and put him in a medically-induced coma. Later, he succumbed to his injuries.
Buthelezi had a 4-0 record before the fight began. Before the incident happened, he had been winning the fight by points.
“I really can’t explain what happened, to be honest. It was bewildering, but in his training and in build- up to the fight, there was nothing untoward with regards to his condition. He was in good nick before the fight,” said Buthelezi’s trainer.
Buthelezi was 24.
