Tanya Fox, 40, has said that she was racially profiled and detained by officers in Caseyville, Illinois.
Fox stated that she was on the way to work, close to 7:45 a.m. when she was stopped by police. Authorities told her that they were pulling her over because she was seen coming from a hotel in a “high-drug area.” She also hadn’t made a complete stop at a red light, they told her.
Fox told officers that there were no drugs in her possession. She also said she was residing in a hotel because her family needed somewhere to stay temporarily.
When Fox told officers that they were racially profiling her, an officer said it wasn’t profiling because the hotel was in a high drug traffic location.
The conversation went back and forth for 35 seconds as Fox asked officers to contact their superiors. She was then removed from her car.
Fox says that she was hurt while being handcuffed with her fingers and arms being twisted. Authorities didn’t find any drugs, and the police report didn’t note any details about drugs or a hotel.
Fox received a citation for expired license plates and obstruction for not obeying commands when she was pulled over.
The officers received “verbal counseling” for their remarks during the incident. However, the police chief stated that the officers acted uprightly and with compassion.
Now, Fox is demanding a state-wide halt to “pretextual police stops. This occurs when breaking a traffic law becomes the pretext for law enforcement to look for evidence of criminal activity, such as drug possession,” according to reports.
