Baseball Legend Willie Mays Dies At 93

One of the greatest baseball players ever, Willie Mays, has died.

Reports indicate that Mays had been residing in an assistant living facility in the Palo Alto, California, vicinity.

Often called the “Say Hey Kid,” Mays was a 24x MLB All-Star, 12x Gold Glove winner, Rookie of the Year, and a 2x NL MVP who played for the Giants. This was prior to the team relocating to San Francisco in the late 1950s.

Mays was with the Giants from 1951 to 1952 and from 1954 to 1974 as he missed two seasons due to mostly serving in the U.S. military. This was also prior to being a part of the New York Mets until the end of his career.

“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, one of the most exciting all-around players in the history of our sport. Mays was a two-time MVP, 24-time All-Star, 12-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” stated Major League Baseball, on X.

“In commemoration of ‘The Catch’ as perhaps the most famous play in the history of the Fall Classic, the World Series MVP Award was named in his honor in 2017…”

“The Catch,” derived from game 1 of the 1954 World Series. It is one of the most famous plays in the history of American sports and greatly depicts Mays as a player. There was no denying his skills, and he was the true meaning of a 5 tool player.

Long after his career was over, Mays, also the godfather to Barry Bonds, was one of the most notable ambassadors of the game of baseball.

Mays was 93 years old.
