On Christmas day, UK bank, Santander, accidentally gave out a Christmas present of $175 million to customers.
The money was sent out in over 75,000 transactions for about 2,000 corporate and commercial clients.
“We’re sorry that due to a technical issue, some payments from our corporate clients were incorrectly duplicated on the recipients’ accounts. None of our clients were at any point left out of pocket as a result. We will be working hard with many banks across the UK to recover the duplicated transactions…” a statement from Santander read.
The company said that the double payments were caused by scheduling problems that are being “quickly identified and rectified.” Additionally, the transactions were regular and one-time payments which could have entailed supplier payments or earnings.
Santander is using the “bank error recovery process” to get their money back.
