Bacteria In Recalled Eye Drops Linked To 3 Deaths And Loss Of Vision

802views

3 people, in various states, have died from bacterial infections connected to eye drops that have been recalled.

The Center for Disease Control says that 68 people in 16 states have been infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa since January. Additionally eight people lost their eyesight, and four people had to have their eyes removed.

The CDC has already warned that the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears has caused infections. It is an over-the-counter product made in India.

Buyers and healthcare professionals have also been alerted about buying several eye ointments made by Global Pharma.

What led to Pseudomonas aeruginosa is being reviewed. No infections have been reported in the country before now.

This bacteria can lead to infections in the blood, lungs, and injuries to the body. It can be spread from person to person, through surfaces, or equipment. Those who are usually infected include those in medical facilities on ventilators, utilizing catheters, have experienced a burn, or surgery injuries.

Symptoms include discomfort in the eyes, blurry eyesight, and discharge.

Experts say that although the incidences are tragic, people can still use most eye drops. The safest brands to use are single-use and preservative-free.
