A producer of powder formulas, Abbott Nutrition, has recalled the brands Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare that were manufactured in Sturgis, Michigan. It excludes all metabolic deficiency nutrition formulas.
Abbott received four complaints from buyers, related to Cronobacter Sakazakii and Salmonella Newport and babies that drank the formula and became sick. Thus, they voluntarily recalled the products. The recall is in regards to powder formula made at that one facility with an expiration date of April 1, 2022 or after.
Abbott tested for Cronobacter Sakazakii in their facilities, and it was found in non-contact areas of the building in Sturgis. Other facilities were tested but nothing else was discovered, including Salmonella Newport. They will continue to conduct the tests.
Cronobacter Sakazakii is a bacteria that is usually found in the environment and in homes. It can cause fever, poor eating, excessive crying, low energy, and other severe symptoms.
The products that have been recalled have numbers on the bottom that start with 22 through 37. They also have K8, SH, or Z2.

If the product has already been used, Abbott says no action is necessary. They urge anyone with questions related to feeding their baby to contact their physician.
