Arlington Athlete Dies After Competing In IRONMAN 70.3 Texas Triathlon

After being a part of the 2022 IRONMAN Texas triathlon in Galveston, Texas, this past weekend, an athlete passed away.

Daniel Winkler, a 46-year-old from Arlington, required medical assistance from a swim safety crew during the swim event part of the triathlon. He was transported to a hospital where he was eventually pronounced deceased.

“We share our greatest sympathies with the family and friends of the athlete. We will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time…,” stated organizers.

The IRONMAN Texas 2022 competition occurred on Sunday, April 3.

During the event, athletes began with a 1.2 mile, one-loop saltwater swim. They then performed a 56-mile one-loop bike course next to the Texas Gulf Coast. Lastly,  they did a 13.1-mile four-loop run through Moody Gardens and besides Offats Bayou.

Winkler was the vice-president of software engineering at 6 River Systems. He was married and a father of two daughters.
