Sydney Carter, a former WNBA player and a basketball coach at Texas A & M, has spoken out after being criticized for an outfit she wore during a college game.

Carter wore a white turtleneck, pink leather pants, and high heel shoes.

Some sports fans expressed their opposition, on social media. Many stated that the clothes were inappropriate while courtside.

“Why would you dress in pants that tight to coach?” one person commented after Carter posted several photos of herself, at the game, on Twitter.

“She dressed like she’s hitting the bar. I guess she prefers to look good rather than be good seeing her team’s record,” someone wrote on Facebook.

After receiving the backlash, Sydney defended herself.

“As a Black woman in coaching, I take pride in showing that people who look like me don’t have to diminish our light to appeal to others, whose opinions never mattered anyway. I will continue to unapologetically be myself, apply pressure, and show that Black women can express individuality while doing our jobs at a high level,” she posted on Instagram.

She added that fashion opposition is just a component of sexism issues in the sport’s industry. She then posted other fashionable photos of herself, showing this is how she is always dressed at the games.

Members of the Texas A & M team supported Carter by posting, “Let them talk. We got your back.”
