After 8 More Murder Convictions Are Dropped, Ex-Police Officer Called ‘A Stain On Our Criminal Justice System’

Eight more homicide convictions may be cleared after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has filed a motion. The convictions are related to a well-known ex-Chicago police officer.

Many have said that the dropping of so many murder cases in one day is unheard of in Chicago. Her actions are in response to claims of misconduct by Reynaldo Guevara.

“He’s a stain on our criminal justice system,” Foxx stated.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Guevara was said to have solved more cases than any other officer.

Now, however, those accomplishments are being questioned. Court documents show that Guevara is said to have coerced confessions and manipulated witnesses and evidence.

Over 24 murder cases have now been overturned.

Guevara hasn’t been charged with any offense and has continuously invoked his 5th Amendment right as it relates to testifying. This was even after he was provided immunity.

In 2005, Guevara retired and now resides in another state. He is reportedly collecting two taxpayer-based pensions from the city of Chicago.

If a judge approves Foxx’s latest motion, 3 of 8 men who are currently in prison will be released. More convictions will possibly be reviewed at a later date.

After many overturned convictions, several lawsuits have been filed against the city and Guevara. Sources note that over $75 million have gone to settlements, investigations, and defending legal accusations in connection to Guevara.
