Legendary actor, Sidney Poitier passed away Thursday night.
The Miami native’s career lasted 71 years. It included roles in many popular films. Some include “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and “Uptown Saturday Night.”
Poitier,94 resided in the Bahamas for several years. He then moved to New York City at 16-years-old. He started working as a janitor at the American Negro Theater in order to receive acting lessons. Eventually, he made his movie debut in a racially charged film named “No Way Out.”
In 1959, he was the first African-American to be nominated Best Actor. He then won his first Academy Award for his role in “The Defiant Ones.”
In 1963, he became the first African-American to ever win the Best Actor at the Academy Awards. This was for his film, “Lillies of the Field.”
In his personal life, Poitier was married to his first wife for 15 years and had four daughters. He was also involved in a nine-year affair with Diahann Carroll at the same time.
In 1976, he remarried and had two more children.
Poitier’s cause of death is unknown at this time. Funeral arrangements are pending.
