Kobe Bryant’s Father, Joe Bryant, Dead At 69

Joe Bryant, the father of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant and basketball star in his own right, has passed away.

It has been reported that Bryant recently suffered a massive stroke.

Nicknamed “Jellybean” because of his love for candy, the 6-foot-9 player won the 1972 Public League Player of The Year Award. This was because he had averaged more than 20 points and 11 rebounds per game while at LaSalle, within 2 years.

Additionally, in 1975, Joe Bryant was the first-round draft pick of the Golden State Warriors. Within 4 months, the Warriors were sold to the Sixers where Bryant helped them reach the NBA finals during the 1976-1977 season.

During the 1982-1983 season, Bryant played for the Houston Rockets but excelled more while playing professionally in Europe, particularly in Italy, prior to moving his family back to the Philadelphia area.

After his playing career was over, Joe was a head coach at various levels, including leading the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks from 2005-2007 and 2011.

Joe Bryant and his son Kobe had a close relationship throughout Kobe’s high school career. However, their relationship became estranged, close to when Kobe joined the Los Angeles Lakers and desired more independence from his family.

Joe Bryant never spoke publicly about his son’s death.

He was 69.
