83-Year-Old Woman Loses Her Life After Falling Down Well Shaft That Was Covered By Rotten Floorboards In Daughter’s Residence
83-year-old Dorothy Downey died after falling down a well shaft at a residence in South Carolina. Rescuers worked for almost four hours to lift the woman out of the 48-foot deep hole after she plummeted through rotten floorboards that were obstructing it.
The tragic occurrence happened on Sunday in a residence in the city of Salem.
Downey had been assisting her daughter in moving out of the home that was constructed in the 1920s, according to property documents.
Police records show that the woman fell through the floorboards as she walked through the kitchen. He daughter got underneath the home to attempt to locate her mother but was unsuccessful.
It was ruled that Downey died from blunt force trauma during the occurrence.
It is reported that the family was aware that the floors were rotten but hadn’t known about the well shaft.
Downey’s death was said to be accidental, and an investigation is continuing.
