An eight-year-old boy has died after he had eaten grapes from a school fundraiser, police say.
Close to 6:30 a.m., on Friday, the Madisonville Police Department, in Kentucky, answered to a call regarding the child who was unconscious and not breathing.
The boy’s relatives told police that he had eaten strawberries from a school fundraiser the previous night and started showing symptoms of an allergic reaction that included a rash.
The unnamed child was given Benadryl and took a bath in order to relieve the symptoms. However, when the symptoms didn’t subside, his relatives transported him to the emergency room. Eventually, he was released from the hospital.
When they went to wake the child up the following morning for school, he was discovered unresponsive.
A notice went out on social media, by the Hopkins County Health Department, warning people not to consume any strawberries bought at the school fundraiser in Hopkins County, following the boy’s death.
It is noted that 443 flats were provided by Madisonville North Hopkins High School and 535 flats were provided by Hopkins County Central High School from Juicy Fruit LLC, Southern Grown and Sizemore Farms.
As of now, samples of the strawberries have been taken to the state lab for testing.
The medical examiner has said that the occurrence seems like an isolated allergic reaction. The report is preliminary.
