A 5-year-old child was disarmed by the police after opening the front door with a loaded handgun in Michigan.
The Battle Creek Police Department reported that a cadet was serving a subpoena on Inn Road, near E Columbia Avenue, when the child first came to the door with a kitchen knife. The cadet called for backup and asked for an adult to come outside. When the child returned, they were holding a loaded handgun, which the cadet managed to remove safely.
Road patrol officers quickly arrived on the scene and found two men and a woman inside the house. They were taken in for questioning.
The police also discovered five children, ranging from 6 months to 8 years old, in the home. One child was transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital before being moved to a hospital in Kalamazoo due to health issues.
As a result of this incident and the “deplorable condition” of the property, Child Protective Services took custody of the children. The police department indicated that the home was condemned by code compliance, and charges related to weapon possession and neglect are being pursued through the prosecutor’s office.
