Akeem Bell, 5, is ‘buzzing’ in people’s ears in Orange County, North Carolina, because of his fearlessness of bees.
Akeem is a beekeeper at Sankofa Farms, located in Cedar Grove. Kamal Bell, his father, is the CEO and stated that his son has taken pleasure in bees since he was born and was never fearful of them.
“There’re nice, and they’re friendly,” Akeem expressed.
Bell added that Akeem was always moving around when he was smaller, so he discovered something that would keep him busy and that they could enjoy together. Then, the beekeeping began.
“This is a practical application and learning a skill is empowering,” Bell said.
Sankofa Farms aims to produce a sustainable food source for minorities in rural and urban locations in Durham and Orange County. Akeem is a part of that mission.
“Alot of kids see Akeem, and they get inspired, especially Black youth. They say, ‘You know what? I can play sports, but I can also learn a skill,” Bell continued.
