A couple was arrested on numerous charges after a 4-year-old girl in their care was beaten to death.

Authorities in Cyril, Oklahoma discovered that 4-year-old Athena Brownfield was missing after a mail carrier spotted her 5-year-old sister roaming the streets by herself.

Husband and wife, Ivon and Alysia Adams, who were taking care of Athena, were arrested last week and charged with child neglect charges in the case.

On Tuesday, human remains believed to be that of a 4-year-old were located at the “fence line” of the couple’s old residence in Rush Springs. A positive identification, however, is still pending per the medical examiner’s office.

In Ivon’s arrest affidavit, it states that Alysia confessed to what she’d witnessed her husband do to the little girl on Christmas. Alysia says Ivon beat Athena and held her up by her arms nearly knocking her unconscious. He then laid her on the ground and punched her two or three more times in the chest. Alysia says that’s when Athena didn’t move anymore.

Ivon then allegedly took Athena’s body to a home they used to live at and buried her near the fence before putting a branch over the burial site.

He faces charges of first-degree murder and felony child neglect and remains in jail without a bond.

Alysia was charged with two counts of felony child neglect and given a $500,000 bond. She remains in custody.
