On Wednesday, the Coast Guard continued looking for 38 people in the waters off Florida after a boat capsized. The missing people had been traveling from the Bahamas in a possible human smuggling incident.
Emergency crews found the body of one of the 40 people that were said to have been on the boat. It sank about 45 miles east of Fort Pierce.
One person survived and was rescued by a commercial mariner who saw him holding onto the boat that was overturned.
The person who survived told the Coast Guard that 40 of them had come from Bimini in the Bahamas on Saturday evening. However, the weather was bad, and the boat capsized. No one was wearing a life jacket.
The survivor was transported to a hospital for dehydration and sun exposure. He is being questioned by Homeland Security and is in stable condition.
A 140-mile area search began on Tuesday morning and continues.
