Two Men Are Accused of Smuggling After 26 Girls Were Found Dead in the Mediterranean

Italian authorities are investigating the death of 26 teenage girls that were found floating in the Mediterranean Sea.
The bodies were recovered Sunday and the girls were between the ages of 14-18 and believed to be from Niger and Nigeria and possibly in route from Libya to Europe.
Police said the bodies were one of four separate rescue operations and that their body was found near a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunken when rescuers arrived.
Authorities say Libya is a well known jump off point for migrants seeking refuge on European shores and also known for human trafficking because its smuggling operations have gone widely unchecked due to Libya’s lack of governance.
The women have not yet been identified and Salerno’s head of police said they would be performing autopsies on the ladies to see if they had been abused sexually. We will be keeping you up to date with this story as it unfolds.
