An investigation has begun after a teenager died in a wreck, close to the southern Texas border. It involved a car that is thought to have been used for human smuggling.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) stated that the wreck happened on Ranch Road 674, north of Bracketville, close to 3 p.m., on Wednesday.

Authorities were pursuing a Dodge Ram pickup suspected of human smuggling when the incident occurred.

“The driver lost control, veering off the roadway & rolled over, ejecting multiple occupants,” DPS noted.

At first, authorities stated that two male passengers had lost their lives as three occupants were airlifted to a medical facility.

Later, authorities said that just a 17-year-old passenger in the Dodge had died. The 18-year-old driver and two other passengers were listed in critical condition.

Homeland Security Investigations and the Texas Department of Public Safety will both be investigating the matter.
