On Monday, a Saratoga County, New York, sheriff’s deputy tackled a Black, autistic boy. This happened at a Target store. The boy’s mother says that her son did nothing to provoke the incident.
The 14-year-old was waiting for his siblings and cousins to complete their transactions. They were using Easter money to buy items. He was tackled to the ground as his sister yelled, “What the (expletive) are you doing? Get the (expletive) off my brother. He has autism. He has autism.”
A witness recorded the incident that shows the boy’s 17-year-old sister attempting to push the officer off of her brother. The sister was apprehended and continuously tells the deputy and plainclothes officers that her brother is autistic.
The deputy seemed to be attempting to handcuff the male teen. But, eventually, he lifted him up while simply holding the teen’s wrist. His sister repeatedly asked the officers why they were detaining her brother.
“I have money,” the teen said as raised up what seemed to be candy in his hand that was free.
Later, the sister was led out of the store. She has been charged with felony assault and resisting arrest. Police say that she hit an officer with a soap bottle. That officer was treated at the hospital. Her brother, was eventually handcuffed, but no charges were filed.
The teen’s mother, Chante Ware, has hired a lawyer. She says her kids were racially profiled.
It is unclear how the whole situation started. A witness says that the manager of the store wanted the teens and children to exit. That’s when things got out of control. There seemed to have been problems with the family at that store before that day.
The teen girl was arraigned in family court and was released to her mother.
