Jussie Smollett character written out of current ‘EMPIRE’ season.
The executive producers of the series “Empire” released a statement Friday morning, announcing Smollett’s character, Jamal Lyon, will not be featured in the final two episodes of the shows current season in an effort to “avoid further disruption.”
This announcement comes less than 24 hours after Smollett appeared in bond court after being charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly orchestrating his own racist, homophobic attack on Jan. 29 in Chicago.
While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out,” the statement reads. “We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season.”
The producers also said that, “Jussie has been an important member of our ‘Empire’ family for the past five years and we care about him deeply.”
There is no word yet on whether or not Smollett’s character will appear in future “Empire” seasons.
