Michigan Mother Faces Felony Charges for Allegedly Abandoning Her Three Children in Horrific Living Conditions
A Michigan woman is facing felony child abuse charges for allegedly abandoning her three children in a home for several years, subjecting them to horrific living conditions.
Kelli Marie Bryant, 34, was charged with three counts of first-degree child abuse by Judge Ronda Gross of the 50th Court on Wednesday. If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Reports indicate that deputies from Oakland County received a welfare check request on February 14 from a landlord who hadn’t heard from the mother since December 2024. Upon arriving at the residence on the 600 block of Lydia Lane in Pontiac, authorities found a 15-year-old boy and two girls, aged 12 and 13, living in abysmal conditions, surrounded by trash, human waste, and mold. In some areas of the house, garbage was stacked up to four feet high, with mold and human feces scattered everywhere. The bathrooms were overflowing with waste, and officials observed that the mother had only dropped off trash bags, gloves, and Febreze back in 2020.
When police entered the home with the landlord, they discovered the daughters hiding in the bathroom while the son was in another room.
The boy informed authorities that he and his sisters had been living alone since 2020 or 2021, surviving on prepared food delivered once a week.
The children were taken to a local hospital for assessment and have since been placed in the care of a relative through Child Protective Services. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated that her office would also represent the Department of Health and Human Services in efforts to terminate Bryant’s parental rights.
Prosecutors revealed that Bryant lived in the home with her four children in 2019, but at some point in 2020 or 2021, she moved out, leaving three of her children behind while the fourth went to live with their father.
The father of the three children was in jail during the summer of 2020, and while a consent agreement was executed in 2022 for him to see his kids, the mother reportedly did not allow any contact between them.
Bryant was arrested without incident and is currently being held at the Oakland County Jail.
