An investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot by Desoto police officers Friday morning.
On December 13, 2024, around 10:39 a.m. DeSoto police dispatch received a 911 hang-up call from a residence in the 1000 block of Hunter’s Creek Dr. When contact was reestablished, the caller identified himself as Arthur Lee Armstrong, Jr., a 26-year-old man, stating that he possessed “several” weapons and intended to harm police officers.
The DeSoto Police Department dispatched patrol officers to the scene after a second caller confirmed that Armstrong was with multiple residents at the location and was armed with a knife. Upon arrival, officers encountered Armstrong in the front yard, armed with a knife in each hand. He approached the officers aggressively, ignoring repeated commands to stop and drop the weapons.
As he closed the distance to the officers, a DeSoto officer fired a single shot from a patrol rifle, hitting Armstrong in the chest. Officers disarmed him and immediately initiated lifesaving efforts. Armstrong was transported by DeSoto EMS to Central Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In response to the incident, the Major Crimes Unit from the Grand Prairie Police Department’s Investigative Services Bureau has been called in to lead the investigation.
Additionally, the Public Integrity Unit of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office was notified, and an investigator has been assigned to conduct an independent inquiry. The officer who discharged his weapon during this incident has been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with DeSoto Police Department policy while investigations are ongoing.
We recognize the significant impact that events like this can have on our community, the individuals involved, and their families. The DeSoto Police Department is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident and is committed to providing updates as more information becomes available.
Did they had 2 shoot him in the chest, instead of his leg. So sad!
I’m sad this young man put himself in this position to be shot and killed in front of him family members, the officer tried his best to get this young man to drop the knives but once the young man decided to continue to approach the officer he had to make the choice to keep himself safe.
