Inside of the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center, on February 16, 2024, at about 6:23 p.m., three inmate workers suffered from a medical emergency.
Jail staff quickly took life-saving measures. CPR efforts were started and Naloxone, a life-saving medication for opiate overdoses, was given.
Two inmates had to be taken to a local medical facility in stable condition. The other inmate was taken to a medical facility in Dallas in critical condition.
The Texas Rangers are now helping the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Detectives with the investigation as jail policies and procedures will be analyzed. The teamwork between the jail staff, medical professionals, and law enforcement shows the dedication to ensuring that those in confinement are cared for, the sheriff’s office stated.
On January 1, 2021, the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office started their Policy and Procedure and training on the use of Intranasal Naloxone to all workers. Guidelines state that they are to help any person that may be experiencing an opioid overdose.
An investigation is on-going.
