Five missing Marines are said to be dead over 24 hours following their helicopter crashing as they were on a training flight.
The five had been reported missing after their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter was supposed to report to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Tuesday night. The helicopter had left from Creech Air Force Base, close to Las Vegas and was headed to Miramar, near San Diego.
The Marines began a search and requested assistance from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Civil Air Patrol.
The department noted that it was informed at about 1:50 a.m. and deployed its own helicopter to look. However, the helicopter wasn’t able to get to the area because of the atmospheric river storm that had impacted the region.
At about 9:08 a.m. on Wednesday, the helicopter was found.
Now, there is an effort to retrieve the remains of the victims, and an investigation is continuing.
